SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

The construction industry is one of the largest contributors to global waste generation, particularly through construction and demolition (C&D) activities. Inefficient waste management in this sector not only leads to environmental degradation but also results in economic losses, safety hazards, and regulatory challenges. This paper aims to investigate the critical issues related to waste generation in the construction industry, with a specific focus on the challenges faced in managing such waste effectively. The study also seeks to understand the broader impact of poor waste management and evaluate the effectiveness of current policies and practices in place. A mixed- method approach was employed, combining qualitative interviews with construction professionals and the analysis of secondary data, including policy documents, research papers, and industry reports. The findings indicate that poor planning, limited awareness, lack of training, and insufficient enforcement of environmental regulations are the major obstacles in achieving sustainable waste management. Additionally, existing waste management policies are often outdated or not effectively implemented on construction sites. The study concludes that a more integrated and proactive approach is essential for improving waste management in the construction industry. Recommendations include the adoption of modern waste tracking technologies, increased stakeholder engagement, stricter policy enforcement, and regular training programs for workers. This research contributes to the growing need for sustainable practices in the construction sector and provides insightsfor policymakers and industry leadersto revise and strengthen current waste management frameworks.
